Artist Kathy Steere embraces art in all forms, from creating wooden sculptures from downed trees to painting backdrops for school plays and completing a fine art certification in botanical art. Her collection of fun, fine and fiber art sums up the “Facets of Kathy Steere” exhibit on display at Gallery 200, 200 Main Street, West Chicago. The Gallery will host the exhibit from July 5 – 28, 2013.

Great things happen when caring people get involved, like the team of community champions who participated in the West Chicago leg of the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run held earlier this month. Together with other law enforcement agencies, the statewide fundraising campaign which supports Special Olympics Illinois topped the $3 million mark. This is the first time the organization has reached that dollar level.

The award program was designed to acknowledge the efforts businesses are making on behalf of their objectives and those of greater benefit to the community. Thanks to the efforts of Administrative Librarian, Melody E. Coleman, a unique partnership has been developed between the West Chicago Public Library District (WCPLD), DuPage African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, and the Illinois Youth Correction center (IYC) in Warrenville. The program, named BEND (Books Enlighten, Nourish and Delight), provides quarterly delivery of books and magazines to the juvenile females incarcerated at IYC-Warrenville.

The City of West Chicago has announced the opening of Old Time Pottery later this summer at the corner of Illinois Route 59 and Illinois Route 64 (North Avenue) in the Mosaic Crossing Shopping Center. The family-owned retail chain which had its roots in the southeast is expanding to the western suburbs, and has chosen West Chicago, Illinois as the newest Midwest location. Old Time Pottery currently has locations in Rockford, Illinois and Merrillville, Indiana

The West Chicago City Museum hosts Sweet Home Chicago: The History of America’s Candy Capital from June 19 - August 24, 2013. This traveling exhibit from the Elmhurst Historical Museum, a department of the City of Elmhurst, Illinois, tells the story of the candy industry in the Chicagoland area. West Chicago’s own sweet treat producers will also be featured.
