Ball Horticultural Company, Metabolix, Inc. and Floral Plant Growers LLC announce the Mirel®-based biodegradable SoilWrap® plant containers are now available at Home Depot stores. Gardeners just plant the container directly into the soil. Many varieties of plants are available in the containers.
Casa Real Mexican Restaurant and Nightclub, 960 E. Roosevelt Road, closed its doors at the end of March.
The Emerald Ash Borer devastated more than 100 trees in the parks of West Chicago Park District. Easton Park suffered the largest loss. In January Graf Tree Service on behalf of the park district applied for a reforestation grant administered by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus. The park district received the $10,000 grant and used it to purchase 85 trees. Park district staff, Phil Graf Tree Care staff and volunteers planted the trees Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28.
Cantigny Golf, 27W270 Mack Road in Wheaton, is among the 30-plus golf courses chosen nationwide to host the 2012 summer TOUR Academy Junior gold camps, and just one of two in in the Chicagoland area.
Mapei celebrates its 75th Anniversary. It has grown from a three-man start-up company, manufacturing paints and coatings for commercial buildings in Milan, Italy to the Mapei Group and the of opening manufacturing facilities, distribution centers and commercial offices around the world, and employing 7,500 people. The product offering has expanded to the innovative development of more than 1.400 adhesives, sealants and chemical products for the building industry, and, at the same time, working with a strong commitment to the environment and sustainability.
The West Chicago facility is one of the eight-manufacturing/distribution centers in the United States. The property addresses are 430 and 530 Industrial Drive and 1600 Western Drive. Their products are featured when Menard’s has its “Made in the U.S.A.’ promotions, and are sold at other home improvement retailers such as Home Depot and Lowe’s.

Hawthorne’s Backyard Bar & Grill holds its annual golf outing Saturday, May 5, and is donating a portion of the proceeds to Boy Scout Troop 33 for the purchase of some new equipment.
Some of the local businesses contributing to the DuPage Veterans Foundation fundraiser honoring World War II veterans are Konewko & Associates, State Bank of Illinois and West Chicago Printing Company. Augustino’s Rock and Roll Deli, Dominick’s Cucina & Pizzeria and Hawthorne’s Backyard Bar & Grill are three of the four restaurants catering the event. The fundraiser is Saturday, May 5, at DuPage Airport. Gates open at 11 a.m., and lunch with the veterans is at 12:30 p.m.
We Go Dreams Greenhouse & Garden Center, 1055 W. Washington Street, hosts an Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 6. Refreshments are served and persons have the opportunity to win some raffle prizes. The greenhouse has a new web page, wegrowdreams.org. Cantigny Park, 1S151 Winfield Road in Wheaton, has many activities scheduled for May. These include open houses and tours.
- The Horticultural Department hosts an Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 6. Additionally there is the annual sale for bulbs and a selection of freshly dug perennials, demonstrations, exhibits and children’s activities.
- The National Public Gardens Day is Friday, May 11, with tours highlighting spring plantings at 10: 30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
- Armed Forces Day celebration is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 19.

Professional Development Services and Training Plus in partnership with Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce have a series of programs to help businesses build strong leadership skills with continuous improvement for “top performance” employees. Each series has six sessions, meeting once a month in the chamber training center, 306 Main Street.
- Level 1 series is a repeat of the one for supervisors conducted last year. The fifth session “Get Your Employees Involved: A Guide to Success” is from 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesday May 9. The charge per session is $59 for members and $69 for non-members.
- Level 2 series covers leadership advancement with the enhancement of skills, building of confidence and strengthening of professional development. The fifth session “Juggling Multiple Priorities-Part I” focuses on prioritizing work to support key results. It takes place from 8 to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10.
