     On Thursday, May 02, 2013 at a Special Board of Education meeting, Board Member Chris Scheck, who served on the board for 9 years, was recognized by the Board of Education for her exceptional dedication and outstanding leadership for West Chicago School District 33. Board Vice President, Julie Pearson, acknowledged that Chris brought professionalism, integrity, and exceptional leadership to this Board, and personally thanked her for the high level of standards that she set for this Board.

Teacher Appreciation Week in District 33

     May 6 through May 10, 2013 is Teacher Appreciation Week in District 33. Thank a teacher for making public schools great!


     Tuesday, May 7, 2013 has been designated as National Teacher Day, and West Chicago Elementary School District 33 is joining other districts across the nation to thank and acknowledge teachers, as well as all District 33 staff, for their commitment and contribution to the education of our children and to our public schools.

5th Annual Wellness Walk

     It was a beautiful, sunny spring day for the West Chicago Elementary School District 33 5th Annual Wellness Walk, Friday, April 26, 2013. District 33 students and staff joined with members of the community, including West Chicago Mayor Ruben Pineda and Deputy Chief Mike Upplegger of the West Chicago Police Department, to walk in the 5th Annual Wellness Walk. Cadence Health commemorated this 5 year milestone with a generous donation of We Can Walk Every Day wristbands for all students and community members that walked at least one mile on this day.

District 33 Celebrates Week of the Young Child

      The week of April 14 through April 20, 2013 has been designated as the Week of the Young Child by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The Week of the Young Child is a time to focus on the needs of young children and their families and to emphasize the crucial role that adults play in giving children the foundation needed to succeed in school and beyond. This year’s theme is “Early Years are LearningYears”.

District 33 Offering All-day Dual Language Kindergarten Options

     On February 21, the District 33 Board of Education unanimously approved the adoption of an all-day kindergarten program beginning with the 2013-2014 school year. This program will be piloted at Gary Elementary School within the Dual Language program. This decision comes after months of researching the feasibility and benefits of implementing an all-day kindergarten program. Guided by the goals outlined in District 33’s Long Term Strategic Plan developed in 2011 by a group comprised of parents, community members, members of the board of education, local business people, and District 33 administration and staff members, administration began to research the benefits and feasibility of implementing an all-day kindergarten option in District 33. The group researched the all-day kindergarten program from two different perspectives: academic, which included the social, emotional and behavioral components; and operational, which included financial, transportation, staffing/enrollment and building space.

     West Chicago Middle School Student Council invites the community to meet the five candidates running for four available seats on District 33’s School Board of Education.


     Each candidate will respond to questions from members of student council. The session will conclude with questions from the audience.

West Chicago Middle School 7th Grade Boys Volleyball Team Takes First Place

     On Saturday, February 23, 2013 the West Chicago Middle School 7th grade boys’ volleyball team defeated Stratford Middle School, Wheaton Christian Grammar School, and Jay Stream Middle School in the Stratford Stampede Tournament, at Stratford Middle School in Bloomingdale. This undefeated day put the Chargers in first place and sent the team home with a trophy, which will be on display in the main office of the school.

West Chicago Middle School Announces 2nd Quarter Honor Roll

     The following students made Honor Roll at West Chicago Middle School for the second quarter of the 2012-2013 school year.


     Students are credited in two areas. The area of Achievement means the student's grades are average "B" or above. Students are also graded in the area of effort, with "1" being the highest grade. Students making High Honor Roll received all A's in achievement and all 1's in effort.

Raising the Bar on ISAT Results

     District 33 is committed to giving students the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to succeed in the future, whether that includes college, a career or both.


     The need to prepare our students for advanced schooling has led Illinois schools, including District 33, to start implementing the Common Core State Standards. These new standards outline the skills and content our students must master in Math and English Language Arts at each grade level to continue on the path to college and career readiness.

Outstanding Students of the 2nd Quarter 2013

     Each grading period teachers at West Chicago Middle School nominate students to receive the “Outstanding Student of the Quarter” award. Each team of teachers is encouraged to nominate up to four students per quarter. Exploratory and PE teachers are also invited to select students from their classes to receive awards.

School Climate and Learning Conditions

     West Chicago Elementary School District 33 will join the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in providing a unique opportunity for teachers, students, and parents across the state to have a role in improving their schools. Between Feb. 1 and the end of March 2013, teachers, students and parents will be asked to take a 15-minute research-based survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s climate and learning conditions.
