The 2013 Rotary Scholarship winners and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) recipients were honored at today’s luncheon meeting of the West Chicago Rotary at Pal Joey’s Restaurant in West Chicago. In attendance were scholarship winners Elizabeth Youngwith, Cristina Fernandez, and Gaby Hernandez, of West Chicago High School, each of whom received a $1000 scholarship, as well as RYLA participants Alena Troia, a freshman at West Chicago High School and Samantha Quinones, a junior. “It is a pleasure to be able to award such talented, smart students with our scholarships this year,” said Rotary President Melody E. Coleman, Administrative Librarian of the West Chicago Public Library District. “and also to be able to support RYLA in the development of emerging leaders.”

“No man, and no nation, is an island,” says Dorothy Drummond, former president of the National Council for Geographic Education, who addressed the weekly meeting of the West Chicago Rotary Club at Pal Joey’s Restaurant on February 20. Drummond, who is the author of Holy Land, Whose Land? spoke at the invitation of Rotary Club President Melody E. Coleman, who is also the Administrative Librarian at the West Chicago Public Library District.

West Chicago Sister Cities meetings are informal, in a "Stammtisch" setting, with good food and conversation. The featured speaker will be Nora Wessels, Foreign Language teacher at Community High School District 94. Ms. Wessels will share her interest in learning German and becoming a German teacher, her experiences in Germany, and her goals for the Community High School District 94 German program. Ms. Wessels teaches German I-IV, sponsors the German Club, and facilitates the exchange program between Simon-Marius Gymnasium in Gunzenhausen, Germany and Community High School. This year Community High School will be hosting German students from mid-March to April 1 and Community High School students will be travelling to Germany in June. Ms. Wessels graduated magna cum laude from North Central College in 2011 with a major in German and a minor in Secondary Education. She studied for a winter semester in Berlin and has visited her host family in Karlsruhe many times. She is an active member of the Northern Illinois chapter of AATG.
Tana Tatnall, Executive Director of Literacy DuPage, addressed the weekly meeting of the West Chicago Rotary Club at Pal Joey’s Restaurant on October 24 at the invitation of Rotary President Melody E. Coleman. In her introduction of Ms. Tatnall, Ms. Coleman, who also serves on the Literacy DuPage Board of Directors, emphasized that Literacy DuPage was seeking the Club’s assistance in recruiting much-needed volunteers for their program.

An Oktoberfest-style community dinner, planned for Saturday, September 29, 2012, is being organized by West Chicago Sister Cities. The event will be held at the American Legion Post located at 123 Main Street in downtown West Chicago. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for a cash bar with dinner being served at 7:00 p.m. The same menu, which received rave reviews last year, will include roast pork loin with mustard sauce, lemon basil chicken breast, German potato salad, cucumber salad, vegetable and soft pretzels

Jane Hodgkinson, Assistant Governor of Rotary International District 6440, brought her incredible story of service to the weekly meeting of the West Chicago Rotary at Pal Joey’s on September 19. Having just retired after 30 years of service at the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA), she spoke at the invitation of West Chicago Rotary President, Melody E. Coleman. Jane worked her way up to Executive Director of WDSRA and, along the way, picked up a number of accolades: the Professional Award in 1990, the Fellow Award in 1998, and the Robert Artz Award in 1999. Jane, who lives in Wheaton with her attorney husband, has served her local Carol Stream Rotary for 15 years as well, having served as President twice in the past.

The atmosphere at the installation dinner was even warmer than the weather as Ms. Coleman was enthusiastically applauded by her fellow Rotarians. This is Ms. Coleman’s second term as president of the organization. Her first term, in 2005, marked the very first time a woman had held the position
